Heresy is afoot at Control Magazine's web site as folks are debating the merits of intergrating the DCS/PLC and Safety System. My answer is "Not No, But Unequivocally No!"

The DCS/PLC and safety system should be separate because:
- Safety systems are hallowed ground and should only be entered into if necessary.
- Codes require they be separate.
- Only the right personnel should have access to the safety system. DCS and PLC security varies and needs to allow everyone from operators to technicians to engineers to access the system. A separate safety system can be locked down because changes should be infrequent.
- Secured buses can communicate status from the SIS to the DCS and supply most of the functionality of an integrated system.
